March 26th marks Purple Day, an international grassroots effort dedicated to raising awareness about epilepsy. Founded by Cassidy Megan, a young girl from Canada, Purple Day encourages people around the world to wear purple in solidarity with those living with epilepsy, fostering understanding and dispelling myths surrounding the condition. Coinciding with National Nutrition Month, it’s a fitting time to highlight the critical role of nutrition in overall health, especially for those managing chronic conditions like epilepsy. While medical management, including medication, plays a crucial role in controlling seizures, the importance of nutrition in supporting overall well-being for individuals with epilepsy cannot be overstated.

Nutrition’s role extends beyond basic sustenance; it can significantly influence seizure control and overall quality of life. Certain dietary approaches, like the ketogenic diet, which is high in fat and low in carbohydrates, have demonstrated effectiveness in reducing seizure frequency for some individuals with epilepsy.
