International Epilepsy Day 2025: A Global Movement for Awareness and Action

International Epilepsy Day, observed annually on the second Monday of February, serves as a crucial platform to raise awareness about epilepsy, dispel misconceptions, and advocate for improved treatment, care, and support for individuals living with this neurological condition. In 2025, the global epilepsy community came together once again to mark this important day, with national and international organizations playing a pivotal role in driving awareness and action.

The Epilepsy Journey: Embracing Lived Experiences

The theme for International Epilepsy Day 2025 was “The Epilepsy Journey,” emphasizing the diverse experiences of people with epilepsy and their caregivers. This theme highlighted the importance of listening to and learning from those directly affected by the condition, fostering a deeper understanding of the challenges and triumphs they encounter.

Global Advocacy and Action

The International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) and the International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE) spearheaded the global campaign, calling for accelerated implementation of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Intersectoral Global Action Plan on Epilepsy and other Neurological Disorders (IGAP). This plan provides a framework for improving access to treatment, care, and quality of life for people with epilepsy.

National Epilepsy Foundations: Leading the Charge

National epilepsy foundations around the world played a vital role in translating global initiatives into local action. These organizations organized a wide range of activities to raise awareness, educate the public, and advocate for improved policies and services.

  • The Epilepsy Foundation (US): The Epilepsy Foundation launched a comprehensive campaign for International Epilepsy Day, featuring social media engagement with the hashtag #MyEpilepsyJourney, educational resources, and advocacy efforts. They also hosted a series of events across the country, including webinars, workshops, and community gatherings.
  • Epilepsy Action (UK): Epilepsy Action organized a week-long campaign leading up to International Epilepsy Day, focusing on raising awareness about epilepsy in schools and workplaces. They also launched a new online resource hub with information and support for people with epilepsy and their families.
  • Epilepsy Canada: Epilepsy Canada focused on advocating for improved access to epilepsy care and treatment across the country. They organized meetings with government officials, launched a public awareness campaign, and hosted a national conference on epilepsy.
